Profile
PT. LUCKY SAMUDRA PRATAMA
PT. LUCKY is an aquaculture company based in Indonesia. With an aquaculture department and a processing department, around 80 people work for the company. The pompano the company raises has earned a high reputation for its careful cultivation of a variety native to Taiwan, and is distributed in the Japanese market under the name “Maboroshi no Gin.”
Problem
PT. LUCKY was considering making the shift to aquaculture, but had an overwhelming lack of expertise in the business
PT. LUCKY was established in Indonesia as a company for the processing of wild tuna. Given a market environment in which tuna catches continued to decline, the company sought to make the shift to aquaculture. At the time, Indonesia's aquaculture technology lagged behind that of other countries, and a number of companies that had ventured into aquaculture had already experienced failure. Offshore aquaculture of migratory fish, in particular, was perceived to be more challenging than shrimp pond culture.
PT. LUCKY President Director William Tsai’s father Misai Tsai, the previous president director, said the following about what he regarded as important for their new business: “We can't just think about getting the equipment we need at a low price. To be successful, we must work with a company that will provide not only the equipment but also the expertise, and who will support us for a long time.” Their search for such a partner led them to Nitto Seimo.
Nitto Seimo’s Proposal
In addition to providing optimal equipment, providing total support in establishing a stable aquaculture business
A lot of different knowledge is required to launch an aquaculture business from scratch. Nitto Seimo promised to provide PT. LUCKY not only with equipment and materials but also total business support. We selected a location where stable aquaculture could be conducted and proposed an optimal fish cage design. We also provided support by introducing experts who had the knowledge needed to stably raise juvenile of pompano, the fish PT. LUCKY had set its sights on, as well as how to make and provide feed efficiently so they would grow both fast and healthy, how to prevent disease, and more.
For the first 10 years after the start of the project, we visited the site regularly to perform maintenance and to instruct employees working onsite in the techniques for adjusting the equipment, thereby helping them learn how to operate the site on their own.
Current Status
Business expansion and an increased variety of farmed fish species—Going forward, PT. LUCKY is continuing to aggressively expand business
Success in cultivating a species of fish that few other companies handle put PT. LUCKY's aquaculture business on track, and around 2014, the company decided to try cultivating a new species of fish, barramundi. Through its partnership with Nitto Seimo, PT. LUCKY also succeeded in cultivating this fish species, one that is expected to be in demand worldwide, and was able to further expand its business.
When asked about the condition of their fishing gear, PT. LUCKY says that even after 20 years, Nitto Seimo's nets are still in good quality with regular maintenance performed, and this high quality is another thing that sets Nitto Seimo apart from other companies. PT. LUCKY plans to expand farming of existing fish species and take on the challenge of farming new species in the future, and in turn they have high expectations for Nitto Seimo's extensive network and proposals.
